Tips to get the most out of your boiler
GQ Heating LTD offer a range of plumbing, heating and gas services to Greater Glasgow, and its surrounding areas. A lot of our jobs involves working with boilers, some of which have not been maintained properly, and which could have been avoided.
So, we have put together some tips, which we believe will help you get the most from your boiler!
Fit a room thermostat
If your household does not already have a room thermostat, you should consider installing one. Doing so will give your control over your heating and help you save money on your bills. According to the Energy Saving Trust, fitting a room thermostat, can save you £70 every year!
Arrange an annual service
Your boiler should be serviced annually. In fact, it is generally a condition of your boiler’s warranties. Having an annual service will help you get the most out of your boiler. During the service your boiler’s components will be cleaned and checked. If any problems are detected, they can be resolved, before they become bigger issues.
Do regular checks and get repair ASAP!
Checking your central heating regularly will help you keep control of any issues, and give you confidence that everything is running smoothly.
Sometimes though, there are some warning signs that your boiler and central heating system may be giving you. You should make sure you pay attention to these and seek assistance at earliest convenience, upon discovery.
The warning signs...
Boiler noises- Noise from a healthy boiler, tends to fade in the background. So, if you start to notice strange noises coming from your boiler, there could be something wrong! Often noises are due to lime-scale build up. Sometimes, a de-scaler could be all you need to fix this. If this proves unsuccessful however, you should consider hiring professional assistance.
Orange flame- your boiler’s flame should be burning blue. If it is orange, this can indicate carbon monoxide. This is potentially fatal. So if you find an orange flame, we strongly encourage you to seek immediate help.
Cool radiators- when feeling your radiators, you should expect a consistent temperature. If they are cooler at the bottom, than at the top it's possible there is trapped air. This puts more strain on your boiler and heating system. To release the air you will need to bleed the radiators. Click here to find out how.
Consider purchasing a new energy-efficient boiler
It should be a well-known fact, that newer modern boilers are energy efficient- a lot more efficient than older boilers. So, sometimes replacing an old boiler, for a newer one is certainly worth considering- especially, if your boiler is needing frequent repairs! The swap, can have a significant effect on your energy bills and save you considerable money, in the long run.
If you do choose to invest in a new boiler, it’s recommended to get a Power Flush, before having it installed. This will help clean your heating pipework, removing any sludge and build up. This will improve your central heating system’s overall energy efficiency, thus requiring less work from your boiler and resulting in lower heating bills!
